“Cetaceans and Sharks in Connection” offers two days of educational activities with Natalia Rodríguez, Ambassador for the European Climate Pact.
On the occasion of World Animal Day, celebrated every year on 4 October, Casa de la Ciencia and the Seville Aquarium are joining forces to raise public awareness of the importance of understanding and protecting marine biodiversity. Under the title “Cetaceans and Sharks in Connection”, the two institutions are presenting a weekend of educational and awareness-raising activities focusing on two groups of animals that play an essential role in marine ecosystems.
The initiative will take place on 3 and 4 October and is built around a shared idea: understanding is the first step towards conservation. Two venues, two days and two different perspectives on the ocean, connected by a common goal: to understand some of the threats facing marine animals and discover what we can do to help protect them.
Natalia Rodríguez, a voice connecting the ocean, biodiversity and climate change
Both events will feature Natalia Rodríguez, a young environmental communicator from Cádiz who was appointed an Ambassador for the European Climate Pact last January at just 16 years old. Throughout the weekend, she will explore the close links between marine biodiversity, our oceans and the major environmental changes affecting ecosystems today.
Through her outreach work, Natalia helps make complex environmental issues easier to understand, showing how our everyday actions can affect the natural world and the species that live in it. Her involvement will also offer a wider perspective on marine conservation, exploring not only the animals themselves, but also the ecosystems they depend on and the challenges these habitats face.
3 October: Activities at Casa de la Ciencia
The first event will take place on Saturday 3 October at Casa de la Ciencia, where Natalia Rodríguez will present “132 Decibels”, an awareness-raising project exploring underwater noise pollution and its impact on cetaceans in the Strait of Gibraltar. The talk will look at how noise from heavy maritime traffic can disrupt the way these animals communicate, navigate and find food.
The event will conclude with a visit to Casa de la Ciencia’s cetacean exhibition, giving participants the opportunity to build on the ideas explored in the talk and learn more about these animals and their biology.
*La actividad comenzará a las 11am y será gratuita hasta completar el aforo.
4 de octubre: actividad en el Acuario de Sevilla
The connection will continue on Sunday 4 October at the Seville Aquarium, where Natalia Rodríguez will give a talk at the Global Omnium Auditorium entitled “No Paradise Without Fins”, focusing on shark conservation and the vital role these animals play in maintaining healthy, balanced marine ecosystems.
After the talk, the experience will continue inside the Aquarium with “Sharks: Not What They Seem”, an educational activity offering a closer look at these fascinating animals while challenging some of the myths and misconceptions that surround them. The activity invites visitors to see sharks from a different perspective, understand their importance and discover why, when it comes to sharks, things are not always what they seem.
The activity will start at 11:30 am and is free to attend, subject to availability in the auditorium.
Two institutions connected all year round
The partnership between Casa de la Ciencia and the Seville Aquarium goes beyond this joint event and continues throughout the year, encouraging visitors to keep exploring, discovering and learning across both venues.
Visitors who present a ticket from either venue can enjoy a discount on admission to the other. This joint initiative encourages visitors to experience both attractions while strengthening the connection between two Seville institutions that share the same commitment to education, public engagement and animal conservation.
