Announcement from Seville Aquarium

Today is a very sad day for our team members because we have to announce that Xoana, one of the bull sharks in the aquarium, has passed away.

This female shark arrived at our aquarium in 2014 from another aquarium and has since been one of the landmarks of our center. Thanks to her, we have been able to get to know these majestic animals more closely and understand the importance they have in the conservation of marine biodiversity, as they maintain the balance of the oceans. A true ambassador of our philosophy and work with endangered species.

Since arriving at the aquarium, Xoana had a degenerative and irreversible spinal disease that leads to deformation and neurological compromise. This is a pathology that is relatively common in this species but for which, unfortunately, there is no known curative treatment.

The biologists and veterinarians of our center have cared for and treated the animal during this time, but the progression of the disease in recent months has evolved faster than in previous years.

After Xoana’s case was evaluated by a committee formed by different technical professionals in animal care and welfare, the decision was made to proceed with total sedation.

For the entire team at the Seville Aquarium, it has been a true honor to spend these almost eight years with her. She will be part of our memory forever.
