The Seville Aquarium Joins the SeaChange Project to Spread Ocean Culture to Citizens

The main objective of the Seville Aquarium is the preservation of biodiversity in rivers and oceans using dissemination, awareness-raising, and participation in conservation projects as tools, as is the case with “”SeaChange.

The H2020 project is funded by the European Union and its mission is to achieve a radical change in the way people view the ocean and how they relate to it. Many of us don’t know how our daily actions can have a cumulative effect on the health of seas and oceans, essential resources that must be protected for the existence of life on Earth.

The project will be developed in nine countries through 17 partners. In the case of Spain, the entity Submon is responsible for coordinating the actions carried out by the different participants to raise awareness of how our health depends on the health of our ocean, and how the health of our ocean depends in turn on our actions. All activities carried out in Spain will be part of a participatory event called ” Message in a Bottle“.

This event aims to involve as many people as possible through different challenges organized according to five routes. The “Atlantic Route” will begin at the Seville Aquarium, once the eco-friendly bottle with the message has been received.

The first action will take place on Thursday, September 14th in the city center through an activity developed by the Education Department. In order to raise public awareness about the problem of plastic pollution in the marine environment and how it directly affects the survival of many species, the Aquarium will go to the center of Seville with our mascot Chelo (a sea turtle of the Caretta caretta species), which on this occasion will be entangled in various plastics. The Aquarium staff will invite people to participate in its rescue by freeing it from the different pollutants. The educators will take the opportunity to explain the relationship between people and the pollution of rivers, seas, and oceans. After this action, the bottle will return to the Aquarium to travel again to different centers and continue developing challenges that allow us to change our relationship with the ocean.

This action will also be supported by an exhibition of plastic bottles that will raise public awareness about the responsible use of water.

If you also want to participate and change our relationship with the ocean, you can take part in our action in the center of Seville or check the challenges proposed by Submon on the “Message in a Bottle” website.

Remember! Our ocean, our health.
