The project, present in more than 80 municipalities, aims to raise awareness about the presence of sea turtles on our coasts.

For the third consecutive year, the Seville Aquarium is participating in the environmental awareness campaign “Here We Save Turtles,” an outreach effort that this summer has involved more than 83 coastal municipalities in Andalusia, the Valencian Community, the Region of Murcia, and the Balearic Islands.

The objective of this campaign is to inform citizens about the presence of sea turtles on our coasts and explain what to do in the event of a sighting or stranding of these animals, especially during the summer months and the nesting season of the Caretta caretta turtle.

This year, information signs have been installed on beaches in municipalities along the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts of Andalusia, in high-traffic areas, to remind everyone not to interfere and that the correct course of action is to call 112, the number that activates the Andalusian Regional Government’s Stranding Network protocol.

The campaign is supported by organizations such as Global Omnium, the Oceanogràfic Foundation, the Azul Marino Foundation, the Andalusian Regional Government, and the Andalusian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FAMP). It is made possible thanks to the collaboration of regional governments and coastal municipalities, which are supporting this outreach effort by installing posters on street furniture in their municipalities.

“With this campaign, we aim to continue encouraging citizen involvement in the protection of sea turtles. Informing people is key to ensuring that more people know how to respond appropriately when they see a nest or find a nest. “,” says Susana Montero, director of education and environmental actions at the Seville Aquarium.

In Andalusia, numerous coastal municipalities are participating in the campaign, including El Ejido, Garrucha, Mojácar, and Níjar in the province of Almería; Fuengirola, Mijas, Nerja, and Rincón de la Victoria in Málaga; Barbate, Chiclana, Chipiona, El Puerto de Santa María, Rota, San Fernando, and Tarifa in Cádiz; Isla Cristina, Cartaya, Mazagón, and Punta Umbría in Huelva; and Almuñécar in Granada. Many of these municipalities—such as Rincón de la Victoria, Tarifa, Punta Umbría, and Almuñécar—are joining the initiative this year, along with the Regional Delegations for Sustainability, Environment, and the Blue Economy of the Andalusian Regional Government.

The Seville Aquarium is joining this initiative once again this summer, as part of its work in environmental education, scientific outreach, and marine ecosystem conservation. The campaign seeks to promote greater public awareness and better protection for these endangered species.
